Pissis Itinerary

As well as climbing Aconcagua, Andes and More also offers you the opportunity to climb Pissis which at 6882m, is the highest extinct volcano in the world. It is in the north of Argentina, in the Puna de Atacama region of the Andes. The itinerary is:

Day 1
Arrive in Mendoza (747m), to be met by a member of Andes and More. Alternatively, you can meet the group in Catamarca, further north, on Day 2. You will be taken to your hotel and helped with the rental of any equipment. Welcome dinner included.
Day 2

We travel by private bus to Famatina. Dinner and accommodation included.

Day 3
We travel from Famatina to La Coipa (3260m) where we make camp.
Day 4

We ascend to La Laguna de Los Aparejos at 4620m.

Day 5

A day to rest and acclimatise.

Day 6
We continue our ascent, passing Laguna Azul and the salt lake of Laguna Verde, from where we will have an impressive view of Pissis.  We then continue along the banks of the Laguna Verde and the Laguna Negra to arrive at the Mar del Plata base camp (4560m).
Day 7

Just rest and get used to the altitude.

Day 8
We climb up to Camp I (5100m) to leave food and equipment and return to sleep at Mar del Plata base camp. This round trip takes between 4 and 6 hours.
Day 9

Climb up to Camp I at 5100m to spend the night there.

Day 10

Ascend to Camp II next to the glacier at 5420m. During the afternoon we rest and prepare for summit day.

Day 11

Summit Day! We ascend through the ice field using crampons because of the hardness of the snow and the 30-35º gradient of the slope. After we leave the ice field, the slope continues at the same gradient, but with stony terrain. We arrive at the summit after 6-8 hours.

Day 12
Descend to Mar del Plata base camp.
Day 13
Descend from base camp to the village of Fiambalá. Farewell dinner.
Day 14
Return to Mendoza or Catamarca.
Extra days

There are two extra days built in to the itinerary in case of bad weather or in case the group needs to rest more. So you return to the airport on Day 17, if you are leaving from Mendoza.
