Received an e-mail from Nacho today. Naturally he is disappointed not to have made it to the summit, but as he says, that’s the way it goes with mountaineering. He says that at least he made it back down fully intact – there were other climbers who were having more difficulties with the cold. He spent 10 days higher than base camp. He slept 3 nights at camp III (6900m) and 2 nights at camp IV (7407m). The day that he was going to go to the summit he decided that the next day would be a better option, but he was wrong. He chose a bad day. He got up to 7740m, less than 300m from the summit, and had to turn back. He is extremely disappointed about this and it was a very difficult going back to base camp, but he knew he had to, as he had very little strength left. He’s in Skardu now, resting, and trying to put weight back on, as he has lost a lot over the past few weeks. Should arrive in Islamabad on Sunday.

Hoy, recibí un e-mail de Nacho. Naturalmente está decepcionado que no hizo cumbre, pero, como dice, “como mandá el fin del juego”. Dice que por lo menos, bajó entero con todas las partes de su cuerpo. Estuvo diez días por encima del campo base. Durmió tres días en el campo III 6.900m y dos en el campo IV a 7407m. El día que tenía que ir a la cumbre, se dijo mejor manaña, pero se equivocó. Eligió un mal día. Llegó a los 7.740m, menos de 300m lejos de la cumbre, y tenía que regresar. Siente muy decepcionado y se costó mucho el descenso, pero tenía que regresar al campo base porque ya no tenía mucha fuerzas. Ahora está bien en Skardu, descansando y haciendole kilos a su cuerpo que está muy flaco. Llegará a Islamabad el domingo que viene.

Nacho is now heading back to Skardu and then on to Islamabad. The group has passed over the Gondogoro Pass. Tomorrow they are going on to Shaishcho. Thursday (24th) they will go to Hushe to have a feast at the home of their high altitude guide. He was at camp 4 with Nacho and the French climbers, and so it will be really nice to meet his family and have a meal together. They hope to arrive in Skardu on the 25th and then Islamabad on the 27th. Nacho will then have over two weeks exploring Pakistan and India.

Ahora Nacho está en camino a Skardu y después va a Islamabad. El grupo ya ha pasado por el paso de Gondogoro. Mañana van a continuar hasta a Shaishcho. El jueves (el 24) van a ir a Hushe para tener un comilona con su guía de altura. Estuvo con Nacho y los dos franceses en el campo 4 y por eso será bueno conocer su familia y cenar juntos. Esperan llegar en Skardu el 25 y en Islamabad el 27. Luego, Nacho pasará más de dos semanas explorando Pakistán y India.

Before I write any more – Nacho is okay and safe at Camp 2, with cold feet but no frostbite. No one made it to the summit today due to the weather though, and two climbers have had to be rescued.

This morning, Chris the leader in base camp, woke to a lot of activity. There had been a storm overnight and there was news of frozen climbers somewhere between 7300m and 8000m without any communication. In base camp, they quickly put together a rescue plan to get an unknown number of victims off the mountain. As more news came through, they soon learnt that there was one climber with frozen hands and one climber with frozen feet. Chris also heard a rumour that there was an Argentinian climber in trouble and he has written on his blog just how much this upset him, describing Nacho as a dear friend and one of the coolest guys he has ever met. There was also no word of the French mountaineers and Field Touring's high altitude guide.

But then the radio crackled into life and one of the French climbers spoke to Chris to tell him that there had been a huge storm so they had taken the decision to descend and were almost at camp 2. Nacho's feet are cold but do not seem to be frostbitten. They are all well and will sleep at camp 2 tonight. It will probably take them 1-2 more days to get to base camp. The plan is that the group will now leave base camp on the 20th or 21st and will get to Skardu on the 25th July.

However, there are two other climbers suffering from frostbite in one of the high camps and a helipad has been prepared at 5900m and if the weather permits, a helicopter will land today and take them to Skardu. (Later - I believe that this was not necessary in the end.)

This has been the second year in a row that the weather has meant that the Field Touring group has not made it to the top, but that is the nature of mountaineering at 8000m.

 

Antes de escribir más - Nacho está bien y seguro en campo 2. Tiene pies fríos pero no tiene congelación. Ninguna persona hizo cumbre hoy, debido al estado de tiempo, y dos escaladores necesitaron estar rescatados.

Esta mañana cuando Chris, el líder en el campo base, se despertó había mucho movimiento. Durante la noche, había una tormenta y había noticia de montañistas congelados, sin comunicación, entre 7.300m y 8.000m. En el campo base, prepararon rápidamente un plan de rescate para buscar una cantidad desconocida de víctimas. Cuando más noticia llegó, se enteraron de que hubiera un montañista con manos congeladas y otro con pies congelados. También, Chris oyó que hubiera un montañista argentino en apuros y ha escrito en su blog que esta noticia le afectó muchisimo. Describió Nacho como un muy buen amigo y uno de los hombres más excelente del mundo. También, no había ninguna noticia sobre los dos montañistas franceses y el guía de altura de Field Touring.

Pero, de repente, la radio comenzó y uno de los franceses habló a Chris para decirle que hubiera una ventisca enorme y por eso, tomaron la decisión bajar y estaban casi al campo 2. Los pies de Nacho están fríos pero creen que no tengan congelación. Los cuatro están bien y dormirán esta noche en campo 2. Es probable que vaya a costar 1-2 días más para llegar al campo base. El grupo planea salir del campo base el 20 o 21 de julio para llegar a Skardu el 25 de julio, más o menos.

Sin embargo, hay dos otros montañistas sufriendo con congelación en uno de los campos altos y se han preparado una pista de aterrizaje para helicópteros a 5.900m y si el tiempo lo permite, un helicóptero va a aterrizar esta tarde para transportarlos a Skardu. (Creo que, al fin, no necesitaran un rescate.)

Es el segundo año seguido cuando el estado del tiempo ha impedido que la expedición de Field Touring haga cumbre. Pero eso es montañismo a 8.000m.

Nacho is at camp 4. He is there with the two French climbers from the group. Yesterday he tried to reach the summit but had to turn back due to high winds. He is going to try again today and if he can’t make it, will go back down to base camp. To have reached camp 4 in the current weather conditions demonstrates incredible strength, even if the weather beats him and he cannot reach the top. A lot of other expeditions have had to return to bse camp. Of the rest of the team, some are now in base camp, two are on their way back to Skardu and the man who left early is now on his way home.

Hoy va a intentar de nuevo y si no puede hacer cumbre, volverá al campo base. Well, this is the latest news from Gasherbrum II. Nacho is still at camp 3, having elected to stay when the group that he trekked to base camp with decided to turn back due to bad weather. The group and Nacho had been planning to leave camp 3 last night to head towards the summit. At 10.30pm the group leader decided they should stay the night and see what the morning brought, as there had been 10cm of snow and the winds were starting to pick up. This morning (14^th July) they woke to 50cm of snow, a white out and high winds. Other teams higher up the mountain had to come back down. So this morning the leader had to decided whether to stay at 7000m to wait out the storm, or descend and not summit at all. The storm is supposed to last 5 days and then he estimates it will take 3 days of sun for conditions to become relatively safe. He decided to bring his group back down to camp 2. Almost all the group will go down to base camp tomorrow. The two french climbers are going to stay at camp 2 with one of their guides and may make another attempt, depending on the weather. Nacho, however, decided to remain at camp 3. He has more freedom in his itinerary as he was officially with the group only as far as base camp. Depending on the weather, he may descend to camp 2 tomorrow or try to get up to camp 4. Depending on what he decides to do, I am not sure when I will get more news of him. So it isn't good news and it isn't bad news, but it's not the news we wanted today.

Pues, esto es la noticia corrientes desde Gasherbrum II. Todovía, Nacho está en el campo 3, habiendo decidido quedarse cuando el grupo, con quien hizo el trek hasta el campo base, decidieron volverse atrás, debido al mal tiempo. El grupo y Nacho habían estado esperando salir del campo 3 anoche para irse hacia la cumbre. A las 10.30 por la noche, el líder del grupo decidió que se quedarían otra noche y ver el tiempo en la mañana. Había habido 10cm de nieve y los vientos eran más fuertes. Esta mañana (el 14 de julio) en campo 3, habían 50cm de nieve, un resplandor sin sombras y vientos fuertes. Otros grupos, más altos, tuvieron que bajar. Entonces, esta mañana el líder tuvo que decidir si queden a 7.000m para esperar el fin de la tormenta o bajen al campo 2. Se dice que la tormenta durará 5 días y costará 3 días más de sol para que las pendientes sean seguras. Entonces el líder decidió bajar al campo 2. Casi todo el grupo va a bajar al campo base mañana. Los dos franceses van a quedarse en campo 2 con un guía y intentarán de nuevo, dependiendo del tiempo. Sin embargo, Nacho decidió quedarse en campo 3. Tiene más libertad en su itinerario porque contrató los servicios del líder solo hasta el campo base. Dependiendo del tiempo, bajaría al campo 2 mañana o intentaría subir al campo 4. No sé cuando el líder pueda mandar más noticias sobre Nacho – depende lo que haga en los días que vienen. Entonces, hoy la noticia no es buena y no es mala, pero no es la noticia que esperábamos.

Nacho is now at camp 3 and hopes to push for the summit later this evening (Sunday 13^th). Yesterday, the group and Nacho opted to stay an extra night in camp 2. There had been a small blizzard and the slopes above camp 2 are prone to avalanches so they decided to stay in camp 2. However it was a small storm with only 5cm of snow, but all the same they felt their decision was justified because there were a couple of small avalanches near the climbing route. This morning they were able to leave camp 2 and climb up to camp 3. Nacho is carrying all his own equipment, unlike the rest of the team, so it took him slightly longer to climb up the 50° ice face. It was a slow climb, but everyone is feeling good and the group leader reckons that they will be able to start off for the summit this evening. He reckons that today or tomorrow are the only opportunities. The views are spectacular as they wait at 7000m but they want to get to the top. More news tomorrow hopefully...

Ahora, Nacho ésta en el campo 3 y espera dejar para ir a la cumbre esta noche (domingo el 13). Ayer, el grupo y Nacho decidieron quedarse en el campo 2 para una noche más. Había una ventisca y los pendientes encima del campo 2 son propenso a las avalanchas, y por eso, se quedaron en campo 2. Sin embargo era una pequeña tormenta con solo 5cm de nieve, pero de todas formas, habían unas pequeñas avalanchas cerca de la ruta, y por eso fue una buena decisión. Esta mañana pudieron dejar del campo 2 y subir al campo 3. Nacho está llevando todo su propio equipo, a diferencia de los demás del grupo, y entonces le costó más para escalar el hielo con una pendiente de 50°. Era un ascenso lento, pero todos sienten bien y el líder del grupo cree que esta noche (domingo el 13) podrán comenzar el ascenso final a la cumbre. Cree que hoy o mañana serán las únicas oportunidades. Las vistas están impresionantes desde 7.000m pero no quieren esperar más – quieren hacer cumbre. Más noticias mañana, espero.

The summit is getting closer! Nacho is now at Camp 2. The rest of the group is also there. He plans to climb up to Camp 3 tomorrow morning, leaving at about 5am. The majority of the route up to camp 3 is fixed and the snow conditions on the 30-50° slopes should be favourable. Everyone is feeling well. When they get to camp 3 they will evaluate the conditions and how they are feeling, and then move up to camp 4….and beyond!

Están más cerca de la cumbre. Ahora Nacho está en el campo 2. Llegó esta mañana. El grupo está allí también. Está planeando salir del campo 3 mañana a las 5 por la madrugada. La mayoría de la ruta ya está establecida y hay buenas condiciones de la nieve sobre las pendientes de unos 30-50°. Todos sienten bien. Cuando llegen al campo 4, evaluarán el estado del tiempo y su salud, y luego salir hasta el campo 4.....¡y más alto!

More news in from Pakistan. The weather is has been improving and they hope to head for the summit in the next few days. There is still some wind forecast and very low temperatures but in the past few days there have been some summits and so the route has been established, as long as conditions (weather, mountain, Nacho) permit. At least there is no fresh snow forecast.

This is the plan for the group that Nacho went as far as Base Camp with. His plan will not be much different though.
July 10th – leave base camp at 4am to climb up to camp 1 and sleep there.
July 11th – climb to camp 2 in the morning and then in the afternoon, start to climb a bit higher towards camp 3.
July 12th – get to camp 3 at just under 7000m and sleep there.
July 13th – climb up to camp 4 at 7400m and sleep a little bit
July 14th – leave very early in the morning to get to the summit. It will take about 12 hours to get to the summit and then back down to camp 3, so it will be 18 hours in total above 7000m.

Exciting stuff!

¡Más noticias de Pakistán! El tiempo ha estado mejorando y esperan hacer cumbre en los días que vienen. Todovía el pronóstico dice que habrá viento y temperaturas muy bajas pero en los días pasados, algunas personas hicieron cumbre y entonces, la ruta está establecida. Pero todovía, depende en las condiciones - del tiempo, de la montaña y de Nacho. Por lo menos no se pronostica más nieve.
 
El plan del grupo con que Nacho fue al campo base es así. El plan de Nacho no va a ser muy diferente.
El 10 de julio - salir del campo base a las 4 por la madrugada para subir al campo 1 para dormir allí.
El 11 de julio - por la mañana, subir al campo 2 y por la tarde, subir un poco más hacia el campo 3.
El 12 de julio - llegar al campo 3 que está ubicado cerca de 7.000m, y domir allí.
El 13 de julio - subir hasta el campo 4, 7.400m, y dormir un ratito.
El 14 de julio - salir del campo 4 muy temprano para hacer cumbre. Costará 12 horas para hacer cumbre y bajar al campo 3 - 18 horas en total más alto de 7.000m.

Nacho and the rest of the group are now back at base camp resting. They have been up as far as Camp II at 6700m. The climb from camp I to camp II is very difficult this year. It starts with a 50° snow slope and after about 60m there is a traverse around a hanging glacier. Then there is about 125m of vertical snow and ice and the start of the Banana Ridge which consists of about 15 pitches of 55° to 75° snow and ice. After the Banana Ridge it is another tough 75m before Camp II. It is not easy and the message that Nacho sent from base camp today underlines that fact. It is especially tough as he is carrying all his own equipment, but he seems to be sticking quite close to the group he trekked as far as base camp with. He wrote:
 
"I am very well. I have already set up camp I and camp II. It was a lot of work as I had to carry 45kg by myself. It took three trips and I had to set up a camp before camp I where I spent 2 nights alone, in the middle of the Abrubsi glacier, with mind-blowing views of Gasherbum I, Gasherbrum II y Gasherbrum IV. I left the glacier very early in the morning like someone hitching a lift to get past the crevasses. From camp I to camp II is a really difficult 60° climb. Luckily there are about 700m of fixed rope. The views are unbeatable. I slept one night at camp II at 6505m. I felt very well and then I descended back to base camp. All this is a lot of hard work doing it alone. Now I am resting in base camp in the hope that there will be a window of good weather to set up camp III and IV, and then after that to see if I can make an attempt on the summit. That will be in around 7-8 days time."
 
He is camped next to the group at base camp, and he will be able to discuss tactics with the group leader. They are all being very cautious as there has been news of a climber being lost on Broad Peak and another on Gasherbrum I both of which are close by and subject to roughly the same conditions. One of the team has decided that he will not continue. 

Now that the team plus Nacho are back in base camp, as Nacho said, they are hoping for a 4-5 day window of good weather so that they can head further towards the summit. Everyone is in good health. The weather has been mixed and by Thursday or Friday they are expecting to see very low temperatures and high winds at 7000m, which is the approximate height of Camp III. So until the weather has improved they will not be going there. They are all aware that they are climbing one of the highest mountains on earth and they fully respect the mountain and the conditions on her and will not make a move until those conditions are correct. 

 
Nacho y los demás del grupo están en el campo base, descansando. Fueron hasta el campo II, 6.700m. Este año el ascenso desde Campo I hasta Campo II es muy difícil. Empieza con una pendiente de nieve con 50° y después hay una escalada oblicua alrededor un glaciar vertical. Luego hay unos 125m de nieve y hielo vertical y el comienzo de la "Cumbre de Banana" con 15 anclajes de hielo y nieve entre 55° y 75°. Después de esto, hay unos 75m duros antes del Campo II. No es fácil y el mensaje lo que Nacho mandó desde el campo base lo subraya. Es especialmemte duro para él, porque lleva todo su equipo su mismo, pero se pega al grupo con que hizo el trek hasta el campo base. Escribió:

"Estoy muy bien. Ya he equipado el campo I y el campo II. Me ha costado mucho trabajo porque he tenido que acarrear 45 kg en mi propia espalda, lo he hecho en tres viajes y tuve que hacer un campo antes del campo I donde pasé 2 noches solo en el medio del glaciar Abrubsi, con unas vistas alucinantes,del Gasherbum I, Gasherbrum II y Gasherbrum IV. Salía al glaciar, a la mañana muy temprano como quien sale a hacer dedo para pasar las grietas. Desde el campo I al II es realmente una escalada muy fuerte como de unos 60°. Por suerte hay como unos 700m de cuerdas fijas. Las vistas son inmejorables. Dormí una noche en el campo II a 6.505m. Me sentí muy bien y al otro día bajé hasta el campo base. Todo este trabajo se hace más duro al estar solo. Ahora estoy descansando en el base y a la espera de una ventana de buen tiempo, para equipar el campo 3 y 4 y ver si después de eso, intento cumbre. Esto puede ser alrededor de 7 u 8 dias apox."
  
Su campamiento está a lado del grupo en el campo base y podría hablar con el líder sobre la táctica. Todo está teniendo mucho cuidado porque recien en Gasherbrum I y Broad Peak están perdidos dos montañistas - montañas muy cercas con los mismos estados del tiempo. Uno del equipo ha decido no subir a la cumbre.

Ahora el grupo más Nacho están en el campo base otra vez. Como dijo Nacho, esperan una ventana de 4-5 días con buen tiempo para que puedan subir más cerca al cumbre. Todos están muy bien con ninguna problemas de salud. El tiempo ha estado variable y el pronóstico para el jueves y viernes dice habrá temperaturas muy bajas y mucho viento a 7000m, el nivel, más o menos, del Campo III. Entonces, no van a ese campo hasta mejora el tiempo. Todos son consciente de que suben unas de las montañas más altas del mundo y tienen mucho respecto para la montaña y las condiciones allí y no van a subir más antes del momento oportuno.
